hardware

Personal computer hardware are component devices which are typically installed into or peripheral to a computer case to create a personal computer upon which system software is installed including a firmware interface such as a BIOS and an operating system which supports application software that performs the operator's desired functions. Operating systems usually communicate with devices through hardware buses by using software device drivers. An electronic component is a basic electronic element and may be available in a discrete form having two or more electrical terminals (or leads). These are intended to be connected together, usually by soldering to a printed circuit board, in order to create an electronic circuit with a particular function. Hardware is a general term for equipment such as keys, locks, hinges, latches, handles, wire, chains, plumbing supplies, tools, utensils, cutlery and machine parts. Household hardware is typically sold in hardware stores. I'm interested in them all, and this is a collection of my posts related to hardware.

OsmocomBB SIMtrace

SIMtrace hardwareWhile at the Chaos Communications Camp I purchased a SIMtrace card.

Osmocom SIMtrace is a software and hardware system for passively tracing SIM-ME communication between the SIM card and the mobile phone.

I've already got it set up and running, and played around with it a bit. Hopefully I'll have some time to do some true SIM-sniffing soon.Read more »»

Chaos Communications Camp 2011

I'm going to the Chaos Communications Camp in Germany August 9th - 15th. Feel free to get in touch if you want to meet up there. I'll be holding a workshop for the openLOC-project based on my master's thesis, and I'm really looking forward to getting in touch with other GSM-hackers, so don't hesitate to say hi!

New version of FlicServ released

I just released version 1.1 of FlicServ. This version fixes a race condition that could cause the linebreak to be inserted before or somewhere in the barcode itself. More here.

New blog up and running

I forgot to post this here before now. A couple of months ago I finally got a new quick to post to blog up and running, since I hardly ever seem to update this one other then when I write tutorials and guide.

To make a long story short: I created a blog using emacs, org-mode, jekyll and git/gitosis.Read more »»

gsmblog on new CMF and other news

I've finally got gsmblog.net up and running on a new CMF. It's really a relief to get rid of the old crappy Joomla the site was running off previously. The new site has been up and running for a bit more than a week, and so far there seems not to be any major problems. I still have to do a lot of tweaking here and there, specially on the Norwegian version of the site. Unfortunately I've been knocked out with a fever for a few days, so I'm rather back-logged at the moment.Read more »»

Neo Freerunner

Yesterday I received a Neo Freerunner in the mail. I've spent a little bit of time installing the newest OpenMoko and also the latest QT Extended. So hopefully I'll soon start to write some apps for the Freerunner, and start writing some guides.

Other stuff going on in my life (I finally finished my exams this semester, so now I have time to start updating my sites, and start doing all of the stuff I had planned for this fall that I never got around to). Anyhow.Read more »»

Linux wedge (driver) for Microvision Flic barcode scanner

TuxI have a couple of Flic barcode scanners that have been collecting dust on the shelf for a couple of years. Last time I used these I was using Windows XP as my primary operating system. Just the other day I installed Tellico and decided to catalogue my huge collection of books. A barcode scanner sure would make my life easier. So now I needed a Linux driver for these fine devices. It took me about 6 hours to conclude that the only software wedge available for the Flic on Linux is closed source payware and only supports tethered connections not BlueTooth.Read more »»

Holux GR-240 test - part 1

Holux GR240 GPSA couple of days ago I finally received the Holux GR-240 I ordered ages ago. I've now run it through a couple of short test, so it's time to write my first review on this new fancy device.

Before I get started there are a couple of things I have to mention. First of all my previous GPS was the Holux GR-230, a non SIRFIII GPS, so my comparisons might not be quite fair. For the second I live in Norway, located quite far north compared to the GPS satellites orbits, so all GPS units perform worse here than further south.Read more »»
