gsm

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications, originally Groupe Spécial Mobile), is a standard set developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to describe technologies for second generation (or "2G") digital cellular networks. Developed as a replacement for first generation analog cellular networks, the GSM standard originally described a digital, circuit switched network optimized for full duplex voice telephony. I have been a GSM-hacker since the middle of the 90ies, and GSM and cellular networks is still one of my major interests. I recently completed a GSM related masters thesis. This is a collection of my GSM related posts.

Android App: Tasker

Tasker iconIf you decide to purchase a single application for you Android phone, let it be Tasker. If you need a case or pouch for your smartphone, your GPS, your handheld, or any other gadget you own, you really should look into ordering a nutshell. These guys are amazing. They produce custom handmade pouches for you out of real leather.Read more »»

My new droid: Samsung Galaxy S2

Samsung Galaxy S2Earlier this week I purchased a new Samsung Galaxy S2 to replace my HTC Desire (Though I will keep my Desire as a backup phone for geocaching, gathering GSM network information and the likes). The main reason I needed to replace the Desire was its lack of internal memory. It simply didn't have enough memory for all of the applications I need.Read more »»

OsmocomBB SIMtrace

SIMtrace hardwareWhile at the Chaos Communications Camp I purchased a SIMtrace card.

Osmocom SIMtrace is a software and hardware system for passively tracing SIM-ME communication between the SIM card and the mobile phone.

I've already got it set up and running, and played around with it a bit. Hopefully I'll have some time to do some true SIM-sniffing soon.Read more »»

New blog up and running

I forgot to post this here before now. A couple of months ago I finally got a new quick to post to blog up and running, since I hardly ever seem to update this one other then when I write tutorials and guide.

To make a long story short: I created a blog using emacs, org-mode, jekyll and git/gitosis.Read more »»

Master's thesis

For those of you who are wondering what has happened to me, I've gone back to school. I've just started a two years masters program. And my masters topic is, *drum roll", handset localization in mobile networks. So I'm doing a master in the topic that has been my hobby for the last 10 year or so. Even though I at the moment feel like I will not have time to sleep for the next two years, hopefully I'll be able to be a bit more active here in the future. You will probably see some localization software here soon, and probably some begging for help collecting data too. Oh.Read more »»
