gps

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS) that provides location and time information in all weather, anywhere on or near the Earth, where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. It is maintained by the United States government and is freely accessible by anyone with a GPS receiver with some technical limitations which are only removed for military users. GPS has for many many years been one of my major interests. This is all of my posts related to GPS.

Nutshell case

When purchased my new Samsung Galaxy S2 I naturally also ordered a new handmade custom Nutshell case for it. It's currently in production so I'm hoping it will be here within a week or two. If you need a case or pouch for your smartphone, your GPS, your handheld, or any other gadget you own, you really should look into ordering a nutshell. These guys are amazing. They produce custom handmade pouches for you out of real leather.Read more »»

Oregon 550t for geocaching

About a year ago I got really into geocaching. I promptly got so busy working on my master's thesis that I had to put it off, and then completely forgot about it. So far I've been really satisfied with it, and it's really nice to be able to go geocaching in pouring down rain without worrying about damaging the equipment. As soon as possible I'll write a review of the 550t and post it here.Read more »»

Holux GR-240 test - part 1

Holux GR240 GPSA couple of days ago I finally received the Holux GR-240 I ordered ages ago. I've now run it through a couple of short test, so it's time to write my first review on this new fancy device.

Before I get started there are a couple of things I have to mention. First of all my previous GPS was the Holux GR-230, a non SIRFIII GPS, so my comparisons might not be quite fair. For the second I live in Norway, located quite far north compared to the GPS satellites orbits, so all GPS units perform worse here than further south.Read more »»

Google maps - do I need it?

Google Maps ScreenshotI've now tested Google maps for mobile phones to find out if this is a smart application to have on your cell phone. I was quite optimistic about Google maps for mobile phones before installing it, seeing as Google maps on the web is actually a really great thing. However I was kind of disappointed with Google maps for mobile phones. Here's why.

Also please note that since I currently reside in Norway, this article will reflect that fact. Google maps might be more useful in other locations.Read more »»
